FEMALE INFERTILITY:  Effect of Aging

FEMALE INFERTILTY: Effects of hormones

Hormones are responsible for the process of ovulation in women. When it is time for menstruation, your brain signals the pituitary gland to produce a hormone called the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This hormone acts on your ovaries and helps them to make the eggs mature for the cycle. The maturity of these eggs leads to the production of estrogen in your body. Estrogen sends a message to the pituitary gland that it is time for to undergo the cycle. This phase is called the follicle phase.

As a result of high estrogen levels in your body, the pituitary gland then produces a luteinizing hormone (LH). This hormone acts on your ovary to release the mature egg. Ovulation takes place about 24-48 hours after the rise of LH. The beginning of ovulation is termed the luteal phase.
